Drawn using ebony pencil with click eraser on Bristol Vellum white paper. Later in life, Chiricahua Apache Chief Cochise allowed an artist to make his portrait. There were never any photographs taken of him, so it was kind of a challenge to draw him accurately. I worked from a photo of the artist's portrait, from photos of Cochise's two sons, Taza and Naiche, (Naiche, especially, was said to resemble his famous father), and I hope that I have achieved a good likeness. I decided to portray him as a younger man here, a warrior in his prime, with a keen intelligence, but also a man of fair judgement and dignity.
